UPDATED – 4:25 p.m.

In a statement, Osoyoos RCMP detachment commander, Sgt. Jason Bayda said Osoyoos Fire Rescue and Osoyoos RCMP supported by other first responders attended to a mobile home fire at the Avalon Mobile Home Park on Main Street at about 6:30 a.m.

“Although numerous fire crews responded quickly, the fire had already engulfed the home. Sadly, once the fire was out, the remains of one person were located inside,” Bayda said.

The investigation is ongoing and the exact cause of the fire has yet to be determined, he said, adding it does not appear suspicious.

Our condolences go out to the family and friends of the deceased during this most difficult time, says Bayda. The BC Coroners Service has been engaged and is conducting their own concurrent fact-finding investigation.

The boil water notice issued by the town this morning is still in effect.

ORIGINAL STORY – 10:30 a.m.

An early morning fire at the Avalon Inn & Mobile Home Park destroyed a home and resulted in what the Times Chronicle understands is one fatality, but is awaiting confirmation from the RCMP.

Osoyoos RCMP detachment commander, Sgt. Jason Bayda said he will be releasing information following communication with other agencies.

The Town of Osoyoos has issued a Boil Water Notice as a result of the fire due to the use of hydrants which puts stress on the overall water system.

“People with weakened immune systems and wishing additional protection should take precautions when drinking, washing fruits & vegetables, making beverages or ice, or brushing teeth.”

Until notified, these users are advised to:

  1. Bring water to rolling boil for at least minute or;
  2. Use an alternate, safe source of water.

The blaze on the edge of Peanut Pond occurred around 6:30 a.m. this morning and went from nothing to full-on blaze in only minutes according to an eyewitness near the scene.

“I was shovelling snow nearby at about 6:20 a.m. and there was nothing and when I looked over at 6:35 I saw what looked like a lot of steam rising,” the eyewitness said, adding the flames followed and quickly consumed the mobile home structure. The Osoyoos Fire Rescue arrived shortly after he added.

The eyewitness said he knows one of the previous owners of the mobile home and the unit is 40-50 years old.

This story will be updated once the Times Chronicle receives further information from Osoyoos Fire Rescue and the RCMP.
