Anybody in Oliver or Osoyoos who wants to work in the film industry can get their “break” next month.
Okanagan Film Commissioner Jon Summerland said the valley is now a film and television centre which is growing rapidly and has an expanding need for crew members.
Summerland noted that a company – Take 2 – is hosting a three-day “boot camp” on Sept. 23-25 for people who want to get into the industry. Attendees will experience two days of classroom and hands-on practical training from award-winning professionals, and on Day 3, those gained experiences will be put into practice in the making of a short film.
Summerland said Take 2 is a unique opportunity to network and learn from industry experts. Some of the most talented people in film and television will lead workshops that will guide attendees to understanding what types of jobs are available, what they are best suited to, what skills are needed, and where do they fit best.
And for individuals that already have career skills (electrical, construction, painting, retail, office, fashion, driving), they will learn what are the opportunities and how to transition their skills to this industry.
Additionally, there is a module for actors that is being led by Tempest Theatre and Film Society on September 10 and 11, which will provide insight for actors who want to work in film and TV. The module wraps with a live audition for the roles in the short film being shot on Day 3 of the boot camp.
“This is an excellent opportunity to help people find work and a career in film and television and perhaps realize they already have skills they can leverage in a new industry,” said Summerland. “We need you. We desperately need crew and the opportunities are endless.”
