If you grew up listening to The Everly Brothers or Simon and Garfunkel, you’ll want to be at Frank Venables Theatre on October 2.
That’s when musicians Joel Dietrich and Wayne Rempel of Byrd Dawg will perform the “ultimate” tribute show with their group, Vintage Electric Band.
The “Old Friends Tour” will feature the two iconic duos of Phil and Don Everly, and Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel.
The show starts at 7:30 p.m.
Fans of The Everly Brothers will no doubt remember Bye Bye Love, Wake Up Little Susie, and All I Have To Do Is Dream. And there is no forgetting Simon and Garfunkel’s The Sound of Silence, Bridge Over Troubled Water, and Mrs. Robinson.
Dietrich said he grew up listening to Simon and Garfunkel.
“Their harmonies and the stories their songs tell always resonated with me. When Wayne and I started working on Everly Brothers songs, I mentioned Simon and Garfunkel who were influenced by the Everlys. It seemed a good fit to do the songs of both duos.”
Rempel said he started listening to Simon and Garfunkel as a teenager and loved the emotion they conveyed through their music. “When Joel suggested the idea of performing Simon and Garfunkel it just made perfect sense.”
Dietrich said The Boxer and Homeward Bound are still very powerful songs today that have stood the test of time.
Dietrich said their show on October 2 will definitely “take people back” to that era of music.
“The songs we’ve selected for this tour should all be pretty well known. With The Everly Brothers and Simon and Garfunkel it’s hard to pick a song that isn’t known,” he said.
Dietrich said the tour has given him the opportunity to perform music that he really enjoys.
“We get comments after our shows about how great they are. I’m truly looking forward to playing in Oliver, and hope that people come out and enjoy some memories with us.”
Rempel said they are very proud of the tribute show.
“It is a rewarding experience to see the smile on the faces of our audience during the show.”
