At their meeting on Sept. 15, Osoyoos town councillors gave approval for TRUE Consulting, the Town's engineering firm, to apply for a $6,190,000 grant to begin the construction of a twinning system for Osoyoos water districts 8 and 9.
Earlier this year, Interior Health recommended that a boil-water advisory be put in effect for the districts after concerns were raised that the current system does not provide adequate chlorine contact time to kill bacteria.
A twinning system for the area would provide treated, potable water for domestic use and lake water for irrigation purposes and is part of the Town's yet-to-be-completed water master plan.
The firm will apply to the Building Canada Fund – a national grant program focusing on infrastructure, drinking water, transit and green energy “ for the grant, which would cover the first phase of the system's construction.
The water quality in districts 8 and 9 has been an issue for years.
It's just so important that we address these issues, said Coun. Stu Wells. This would be a huge, huge step.
