Do you support a national park reserve? Why or why not?

I am not in favor of a national park but if government is going to force it on us then I would like to sit on the table and negotiate, not let them do whatever they want.

What is your solution to crime prevention?

My solution twofold. One, we need to educate the community in doing due diligence and observing and reporting crime. Second, we need the police to do their job in solving crime and making the public safe. We need enough police officers providing 24/7 coverage to our community. Most days we have one officer working and we have no coverage at all after 2 a.m. This is unacceptable. The public needs to restore faith in the justice system.

What would you do to make farming in Area C more viable and successful?

First and foremost I would meet with the farmers on a regular basis. Being a farmer myself for 30 years I definitely know what issues they are facing. Community consultation is an important part in governing. I would get rid of the additional garbage fee that was recently imposed on farmland. Get rid of the dumping fee. It is a tough industry as it is. We need to support the industry.

How would you be proactive in preventing more flood damage in Area C?

As a community we face this issue every year. Funding plays a huge role in flood prevention. We can perhaps start putting aside some funds to deal with flooding. We need to make sure our levees are strong and can sustain the additional pressure. We need to make sure our drains are in excellent working order during the off season. We need to have stakeholders, external partners, Oliver Fire Department, search and rescue, volunteers and provincial government involved in the process so we are prepared for these emergencies. If we keep doing the same things we will get the same results. Let’s be proactive and stay a step ahead of floods.

What is your biggest asset in representing rural Oliver?

I am an honest, hard working man who will always keep the community needs in the forefront. I am accessible to anyone 24/7. I have poured my heart and soul into this community and will continue to do so. I am passionate about public service.
