OSOYOOS TIMES-September 23, 2009

Osoyoos has come through once again.
While many of us are struggling through difficult economic times and new funding cutbacks from all levels of government are announced seemingly on a weekly basis, the community was still able to dig deep and help the Cacchioni family, who are dealing with a serious illness.
It truly is a good news story when people and businesses can come together and raise more than $7,000 for a little boy diagnosed with a dreadful disease far too early in his life.
When roughly 90 people and nearly 70 local businesses can find it in their hearts to donate time, money and hard work— when logic would suggest keeping the purse closed and looking after one’s self in the midst of greater expenses and diminishing government assistance— that shows the real nature of a true community.
In talking with several groups and organizations in Osoyoos that are facing a difficult future because of a harsh economic present, the one universal comment that is always shared is “We’re staying positive.”
And despite gloomy economic forecasts, massive deficits, funding rollbacks or slashed budgets, there is reason to stay positive.
There is hope.
Seven people showed that by giving of themselves to try to make things better for friends in need by organizing a fundraiser for Domenic Cacchioni and his family on Sept. 20. (See Page A-10)
The people who participated in the golf tournament and outbid each other in the auctions revealed the hope as well.
As did the sponsors, donors of prizes and the people who have given what they could to the family for the past nine months.
The hope comes from being in a community that supports each other through thick and thin and we’re lucky we have such a thing.
Because many other places in this world don’t have what we have.
