OSOYOOS TIMES-October 14, 2009
Beyond the dues adjustment and arguments about whether the Osoyoos Golf and Country Club needs new management or if the members should give up the club to the Town of Osoyoos, it seems clear that the club’s leadership is not providing club members with enough information about how things are being run.
Indeed, it seemed this alleged lack of transparency on behalf of the club’s board of directors was the only thing club members wanted to agree on at an Oct. 8 meeting which drew out large numbers and brought a few tempers to the boiling point.
All this ruckus may have been avoided if the club’s leaders had simply come right out and told the members what the financial problems were and presented a financial blueprint for the future before announcing a dues adjustment.
Isn’t that the point of having boards and managers?
If anyone had anything right at the meeting, it was the notion that no one should be asked to reach into their pockets without a clear idea from the club’s leaders about where the cash would be going and what financial needs would have to be met down the road.
No one seemed to have a problem with the amount of money being asked for.
Surely, if one can belong to a golf club, an extra $410 should not be something to lose sleep over.
But it’s hard to imagine anyone, whether a tax payer or condo owner or club member, willing to hand over hard-earned cash without a plan in place for how that cash will be used to solve present and future financial problems within an organization.
