Be sure to vote – it is the key to sustaining our democratic system
Yes it has almost become rhetorical now, asking people to get out and vote.
The reality, however, is that it shouldn't be. It should just be something that we do, because it is our right, and also our obligation.
In Australia if you don't vote you get fined.
Perhaps we should bring in a similar law. But isn't that a sad statement about our country – that we would need a law to force us to vote on who is going to run our country, our province or our towns.
Understandably, frustration and a feeling of disconnection from those in power has led to this apathy. But while we can understand that frustration, it is no excuse. Further, on a local level, which is what the vote is about this Saturday, that excuse doesn't wash at all. Those running are your neighbours. They are people you know and see often. If you feel disconnected from them then that is your own fault.
Osoyoos is in the middle of a hard-fought election campaign. There are many issues that are very important to the future of this area.
It is a positive thing that there is so much interest surrounding this election. Hopefully it will make for a better community into the future.
That is why it is so important to vote, because this is your community and the issues at stake are issues that will directly affect your quality of life.
