Oliver, Osoyoos and area saw smoky skies from the latter part of Sunday through Monday due to a wildfire in Washington State which is expected to continue blanketing large areas with smoke.

The Pioneer Fire is burning primarily on the Chelan Ranger District of the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest and on private land 50 km northwest of Chelan, according to Washington State’s Department of Natural Resources.

Currently the fire is 3,664 hectares (9,055 acres) with an estimated current containment of 14 per cent.

Fire managers are using a full-suppression strategy to protect private property, public infrastructure, and natural and recreation resources, while minimizing risks to responders and the public, the department said in a statement.

Additional crews, engines, and aviation assets are being ordered for the fire as critical fire weather continues through this week.
