School District 53 announced Tuesday that it completed bargaining and came to an agreement with the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE).
Bargaining was conducted over five sessions from June 11 to Sept. 9, the district said. A memorandum of agreement was ratified by the board of education and membership of CUPE Local 523 in September.
Following the ratification by local parties, the memorandum was forwarded to the BC Public School Employers’ Association who granted approval on Oct. 21.
The agreement covers union members including education assistants, grounds workers, Indigenous support workers, bus drivers, custodians, trades, clerical, maintenance, IT, administrative support, supervision assistants, and youth care workers. They provide K-12 support services to students in Okanagan Falls, Oliver, Osoyoos, Cawston and Keremeos.
The agreement is effective July 1, 2019 to June 30, 2020.
“Both parties look forward to working collaboratively to support student success,” the district stated in a news release.
