The Desert Park Exhibition Society is opening its barns at Desert Park to horses from the area that need to be evacuated due to the floods.

Bruce Fuller, president of the society, said board members installed bedding yesterday.

One member in the Princeton area, who is on evacuation notice, had to find a home for five stallions and other farm animals, Fuller said.

The facility normally boards horses over the winter months where they do training, but Fuller said the 60 or 70 horses that were here this past winter are now gone, so there’s room for more.

One proviso though – although there is no charge to bring houses to the facility, Fuller said owners will need to make their own arrangements for the horses to be fed and cared for.

“We’re not going to go down every morning to make sure they have food and water,” he said, “so the owners have to make those arrangements. A lot of the owners are horse people who have friends in the community here who are also horse people, who can cover for them.”
The stalls, he said, are a donation by Desert Park to horse owners in need.

Those seeking to bring their horses should contact Paddy Head at 250-495-4334 or [email protected].
