The deadline for returning voting packages for the referendum on electoral reform has been extended due to the labour dispute at Canada Post.
Elections BC announced Friday that the deadline has been extended to 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 7. Previously the deadline was Friday, Nov. 30.
“We have worked closely with Canada Post to understand the full impact of rotating strikes on the referendum process,” said Chief Electoral Officer Anton Boegman. “Rotating strikes have impacted accessibility. As a result, we have extended the deadline to ensure that voters are not prevented from participating through no fault of their own.”
The referendum, with a mail-in ballot, allows voters to choose whether they want to continue with the current electoral system or change to proportional representation (PR).
Under the current system, often called “first-past-the-post,” the candidate with the most votes in each district becomes the MLA. Under PR, seats are allocated to reflect each party’s province-wide share of the popular vote.
Elections BC encourages people to return their voting packages as soon as possible to ensure it is received before the deadline.

Thanks for nothing Canada Post. The sooner we get this debacle over with the better.
No matter, a week or a month or a year isn’t going to change the inevitable result. PR isn’t the answer, only a feeble attempt by a desperate minority government to rig the game in their favour.
