The Osoyoos Coyotes avenged last week’s 5-1 loss to the Kelowna Chiefs by shutting out Kelowna 3-0 at the Sun Bowl Arena Saturday night.

Vengeance seemed to be very much on the minds of both teams in a pair of brutal games that saw play frequently interrupted with shoving matches.

With the win and loss, the Coyotes maintain a three-point lead over the Chiefs, holding onto first place in the Okanagan Division of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League (KIJHL). The Chiefs, however, have played two more games than the Coyotes.

In Saturday’s game, referee Brad Jones handed out 16 roughing penalties and 10 misconducts. And that’s not counting a regular assortment of penalties for such offences as slashing, cross-checking and unsportsmanlike conduct.

Last Wednesday’s game in Kelowna was no love-in either as the two teams managed eight misconducts, both 10-minute and game, along with a handful of roughing and fighting penalties.

Wednesday’s game saw the Coyotes tumble badly from their seven-game winning streak, allowing five straight Kelowna goals before Daniel Stone scored the lone Coyote goal late in the game. Jackson Glimpel and Ryan Morrell got the assists.

Kelowna scored one goal each in the first and second periods before picking up a couple power play goals in quick succession in the third. Seconds later, they added their fifth and final goal.

In Saturday’s game, the Coyotes scored one goal in each period. Goalie Brett Soles, played a solid game, blocking all 28 shots on goal and earning his fourth shutout of the season.

Carter Robinson opened the scoring for the Coyotes near the middle of the first period, assisted by Jackson Glimpel.

Colin Bell flipped the puck past Kelowna goalie Brady Lenardon near the end of the second period to give the Coyotes a 2-0 lead. Austin Cleaver and Matthew Adams got the assists.

In the final period, Ryan Morrell scored on a power play while the Chiefs were two men short for the third and final goal of the game. Assists went to Carter Shannon and Daniel Stone.

On Friday, the Coyotes host the 100 Mile House Wranglers at the Sun Bowl at 7:35 p.m.

On Sunday, they play the Princeton Posse at the Oliver Arena starting at 1:35 p.m.
