Making sure there are no drainage problems associated with two new parks proposed for Oliver is paramount, Town council says.
That was the emphasis at a recent meeting to discuss the Fairview/Gala linear park plan.
An open house attracted more than 30 people who viewed landscaping options for two weed lots – one on Fairview Road across from the high school, and one on Gala Street north of School Avenue.
Feedback
Out of the 16 people who filled out feedback forms, 15 supported the linear park proposal. Seven preferred the Fairview plan, while eight preferred the Gala plan.
Most support a multi-use path and a mix of xeriscaping, grass and plantings. Amenities requested include benches, tables, lights, drinking fountain, fitness equipment and historic signage.
The majority also supported the proposal for a round-about (traffic circle) at the intersection of Fairview and Spartan Street.
Some people raised a concern about drainage issues on downgrade properties.
Councillor Dave Mattes said proper drainage is paramount and will be addressed in the linear park design.
Fellow councillor Larry Schwartzenberger agreed, saying he has heard some concerns from people who live below Gala Street.
Council authorized staff to start the park design and tendering process.
Mattes said he would like to see “shovels in the ground” before this fall.
