The Town of Oliver is leasing airport land for the construction of a 10-bay hangar across from Desert Gem RV Resort.
The lease agreement is with Victor Seder, president of the South Okanagan Flying Club.
Seder said the fully engineered, all-steel building will be fully serviced with a common bathroom. The nested T-hangars will be used primarily to store aircraft.
Seder hopes to begin construction soon after the foundation and forms are laid. If all goes well with the weather, Seder is looking at a March 2014 completion date.
Seder said the main reason he got involved in this project is because of the demand for hangar space in Oliver. He noted that people from Manitoba, Calgary and Vancouver have expressed interest in moving to Oliver and storing their planes here.
Seder said this project will not only create jobs, but boost activity at the airport and bring new money to town.
Seder believes the new hangar building will help the Town view the airport facility as a financial asset, resulting in more improvements to it. So far, five people are financially committed to taking five hangars in the new building, Seder noted.
