Following an emotional address by the mayor, Oliver Town council held a moment of silence for the Humboldt community on Monday.
With his voice breaking at times, Mayor Ron Hovanes paused and expressed his deepest condolences to the Humboldt Broncos and their community following the recent tragedy.
A total of 16 people, mostly junior hockey players, died when their bus and a transport truck collided in Saskatchewan on April 6. The latest victim was the team’s athletic trainer Dayna Brons.
“Along with the rest of the country, the entire Oliver community is deeply saddened that the crash claimed the lives of 15 people and injured many more,” Hovanes said.
“These young people, and team staff, had their entire lives before them, leaving their families heartbroken.”
The mayor said Humboldt is a close-knit community that is still in a state of shock.
“I want them to know that Town of Oliver council and its residents are grieving alongside them.”
Hovanes thanked the first responders who worked through the night and continue to respond to the tragedy with courage and professionalism.
