People will have something big to cheer about in Oliver this Friday.
The Cops for Kids group will be making a pit stop at the fire hall on Similkameen Avenue between 3 and 3:30 p.m. to raise money for their cause.
“Hopefully some of our residents will come out to cheer them on (and bring donations),” said Linda Schaffrick from the Oliver Lions Club.
She noted that money raised in Oliver is earmarked for local children in need.
“They are devoted to helping little hearts in our community,” said Schaffrick about the group.
Once again, veteran rider Cst. Jared Zeeman from Oliver is one of 27 riders on the team this year.
“This physical challenge is nothing compared to what a sick kid and their parents face each day,” said Zeeman.
“I’ve got my friends and colleagues to cycle along beside me, just like these kids have us cheering for them on their journey.”
In order to keep the team and the communities safe, they’ll be travelling in a bubble. Supporters are encouraged to welcome the team to Oliver at 3 p.m. at the fire hall to cheer for these heroes’ efforts before they continue on to Osoyoos to end their first day.
Each rider has raised a minimum of $2,500 in order to participate.
“These are some of the most dedicated folks you’ll ever meet,” said ride captain Ret. S/Sgt. Julio Krenz.
Funds from the event support ongoing requests from families who require financial assistance to travel for medical care outside their home community, emergency dental treatment, medical supplies, learning tools, and mobility aids.
Since 2001, the foundation has raised over $5.8 million for local children who need it most.
