The Oliver Chronicle has won two first place photo awards and a blue ribbon for newspaper excellence in Canada.

Once again, the Oliver Chronicle has been recognized for newspaper excellence – this time Canada-wide.

The Chronicle won two first place photo awards and a blue ribbon for general excellence in its circulation category in the Canadian Community Newspaper Awards.

Editor Lyonel Doherty won first place for best news feature photo of last year’s wildfires, depicting homeowner J.C. Oliveira hosing down his roof while the fire came down the mountain behind his home.

Doherty also won first place for best spot news photo of Oliver firefighters rescuing a 16-year-old boy from the ice in Tucelnuit Lake last December.

The blue ribbon award is for overall general excellence in reporting and newspaper layout.

Linda Bolton, managing director of the Chronicle, was thrilled with the news.

“To say I am proud is an understatement. We are very fortunate to have the caliber of employees we do. They have such a devotion for their job and to the newspaper industry.”

But with any award, it takes the whole team to make it happen, Bolton pointed out.

She also congratulated the Osoyoos Times for its award – Richard McGuire placed third for best news feature photo of last year’s wildfires.

In other news, the Chronicle is a finalist in the annual Ma Murray awards hosted by the BCYCNA. The award categories are best spot news photo and general excellence.

Winners will be announced on May 7.
