Local Liberal party members have chosen Oliver resident Joe Cardoso to stand as their candidate for the new Boundary-Similkameen riding in the provincial election this spring.
Cardoso, a former rural Area C director on the Regional District Okanagan-Similkameen board and a communications director for Anarchist Mountain's Regal Ridge development, beat out Osoyoos Mayor John Slater and Oliver Mayor Ron Hovanes when roughly 725 B.C. Liberal association members voted for a candidate at Osoyoos Secondary School on Nov. 8.
I was very, very pleased to have won, Cardoso said, adding that he heard the news of his victory later in the day while spending time with friends and supporters at the Osoyoos Elks Hall.
As to why he was chosen over his rivals, Cardoso said he felt it was because he offered local Liberals something different from the other contenders.
In the final analysis, I think all the candidates ran a good campaign, he said. I presented myself as an alternative.
I guess at the end of the day there were people who thought I was the better choice.rnCardoso described his campaign leading up to the vote as focused but quiet.rnHe and his team travelled extensively throughout the riding, stopping to meet people in Grand Forks, Kaleden and the Similkameen region.
The riding itself stretches from Osoyoos to Hedley and from Kaleden to the Kettle River Valley.
Cardoso said now that he has been voted in as the official candidate for the riding, the next step will be preparing for the May 12, 2009 election by attending party briefings on the election process and provincial law and meeting as many people in our riding as I possibly can.rn[email protected]
