A cannabis production facility is applying to set up shop in Osoyoos.

A zoning bylaw would need to be amended by Osoyoos town council, who will discuss the application at the June 3 meeting.

The applicant, Sandra Holgate, is seeking to set up the production facility at 11201 115 St. and all production would take place inside the facility.

The proposed property was previously used by an electric motor repair shop (Osoyoos Rewinds Ltd.).

The zoning bylaw limits cannabis production to medical marijuana, however “in recognition that recreational cannabis production is now legal,” town staff recommend amending the bylaw to replace the term “medical marihuana (sp.)” with “cannabis operation,” according to Gina MacKay, director of planning and development services, in a report to council.

“Staff have no concerns with the proposed use on this property and are therefore recommending support subject to the outcome of the public hearing,” MacKay said in the report.

The community was previously able to comment on cannabis production operations in 2016 when medicinal marijuana were added to the zoning bylaw, specifically for properties zoned industrial.

A public hearing is required prior to amending the bylaw to include cannabis operations. Staff have recommended a public hearing on June 17 at 4:15 p.m.

Council will have the opportunity to reject the amendment, or grant the first two readings and set a public hearing. They will make their decision at the June 3 regular meeting at Town Hall.
