A campfire that reportedly started a brush fire in Oliver on Oct. 11 is proof that the fire season is not over.

In fact, BC Wildfire Service has extended the open burning prohibition until Friday, Oct. 28.

Oliver Fire Department spokesman Rob Graham said they responded to a small brush fire at approximately 1 a.m. on Tuesday in the area of Fairview Road and Willowbrook Road.

“Appears a small campfire from some people camping/living in that area had sparked the fire,” Graham said, estimating the size to be 15 metres by 30 metres.
“Crews were on it quick and kept it from spreading,” he noted.
All Category 2 and 3 fires are prohibited, as well as fireworks, sky lanterns, burn barrels and cages.

The prohibition does not ban campfires that are a half metre wide by a half metre high, and does not apply to cooking stoves that use gas, propane or briquettes.

Before lighting a campfire, the public is urged to check with local government authorities to ensure there are no restrictions in place.
