Say goodbye to the blue bags for recycling next summer.
Starting July 1, 2020, the regional district will not accept recycling placed in blue or clear bags. Rural residents will need to supply their own reusable recycling containers.
Recent changes in the recycling program require the banning of all blue and clear bags because they wrap around sorting equipment and become lodged inside other recycling.
Based on the results of a survey sent to rural residents, the RDOS will require every home to supply their own reusable recycling containers. Residents can use blue boxes, regular garbage cans or large rolling carts equipped with a lifting bar.
By request, the RDOS can mail out free “Recycle Only” stickers to rural residents, or they can be picked up at the RDOS main office at 101 Martin Street, Penticton. These stickers can be placed on any garbage can to help mark it as a recycling container.
RDOS Chair Karla Kozakevich purchasing their own containers allows residents to choose the right type of bins for their property.
