Drivers on Main St. in Oliver, in the vicinity of Town Hall, and patrons of the local Subway fast-food restaurant got a shock on Thursday evening at around 8:30 p.m. when a young black bear ambled through the parking lot next to the restaurant.
The bear, which looked to be a yearling, appeared to become startled by the cars driving by on Main St. and climbed the tree just outside the restaurant’s window.
After only a few seconds, the bear climbed back down and ran across the parking area to the cover of the bushes in the nearby park.
One Subway customer expressed his surprise at seeing the bear, saying that in nearly a dozen years of living in Oliver, he had never seen a bear in town.
Yearlings, about 1.5 years old, are typically forced to go on their own by their mother in late spring/early summer.

The black bear appears to survey the traffic on Main St. before quickly climbing up the tree. Photo taken from inside the Subway restaurant.
