The Victoria Day May long weekend is a wonderful time for most Canadians as we celebrate the unofficial end of another long winter and unofficial beginning of another beautiful summer.
However, it’s very sad to say that far too many Canadians lose their lives or suffer serious injury during the May 24 long weekend as hundreds of thousands of people head out on our highways looking for a good time at the family camp, provincial playground or nearest big city to enjoy the night life.
Unfortunately, the excitement that comes with the first long weekend of spring  results in far more vehicles on the road than normal and far too many people in a hurry to get to where they want to go.
We urge everyone to please slow down, take their time and follow the rules of the road this May long weekend.
And when you get to your preferred campground or cottage, please ensure you act responsibly and always wear a lifejacket when you’re aboard a motorized vehicle on the water.
Statistics clearly show there are more accidents and fatalities on our roadways and waterways during the stretch from May long weekend until Labour Day than at any other time of the year.
The vast majority of Canadians look forward to the May long weekend with great anticipation as they should after several months of snow and cold weather.
It’s a wonderful time of the year to enjoy all that Mother Nature has to offer.
Don’t be shy to get out there hiking, biking, boating, swimming or camping, but please be careful getting to your destination and use common sense once you arrive.
This is supposed to be a time of celebrating the gorgeous sunshine and long, hot days spent with friends and family.
So please drive carefully, act responsibly on the roads and lakes and please don’t become another horrible Canadian statistic.
