The regional district is advising residents to prepare for strong winds and thunderstorms forecasted for Friday and Saturday.
Stay safe around waterways and watch for higher-than-normal freshet conditions, warn local officials with the Emergency Operations Centre. They are cautioning residents that waterways including rivers, creeks and vulnerable slopes could become hazardous.
On June 11 Environment and Climate Change Canada issued a severe thunderstorm watch for the Okanagan Valley.
“Thunderstorms on both Friday and Saturday will have the potential to deliver heavy downpours, strong winds, frequent lightning and hail,” said the regional district in a public service announcement.
“Spring freshet and intense weather systems can destabilize soil and rock, causing mudslides, landslides and rockslides which are unpredictable.”
Now is an opportunity for property owners in vulnerable areas, including floodplains, to be ready.
“If you have items on your property that may be impacted by strong winds, please take time to secure them properly,” the announcement advises.
