Oliver Mayor Ron Hovanes has been re-elected by acclamation, while three new faces are vying for a seat on council in the November 15 municipal election.

Petra Veintimilla, Lilly Zekanovic and Jeff Ashe are challenging incumbents Dave Mattes, Maureen Doerr, Jack Bennest and Larry Schwartzenberger.

Water councillors Andre Miller and Rick Machial have been re-elected by acclamation.

Hovanes said he is truly humbled to be the mayor of Oliver, his home town. “I feel comfortable with having another mandate . . . things are happening in Oliver and there is an opportunity to get creative (in the next four years).”

Hovanes admitted he was a little surprised that no one else threw his or her hat in the ring for mayor. Perhaps it was a vote of confidence of what has taken place in Oliver during the past three years, he said.

“We’re a well structured, well run community.”

The mayor acknowledged that you will never have an electorate that is totally content, but the electorate in Oliver has not been openly disgruntled about anything, he pointed out.

Hovanes said an election is healthy for the community, noting he is very proud of the new candidates. “You’re really sticking your neck out by putting your name forward . . . good for them.”

His only advice to anyone who is elected – be prepared to work hard.

“It’s not just sitting around the council table. You have to be committed to the task.”

Running for Area C regional director are Terry Schafer, Rick Knodel and Joel Malcolm. Current director Allan Patton is not seeking re-election.

Running for school trustee in Oliver are incumbent Rob Zandee and challengers Cory-lee Mills and Rachel Allenbrand. Tamela Edwards is not seeking re-election.

Voters will also be asked to take part in a referendum regarding operating funding for the Frank Venables Theatre.

Residents will be asked if they approve an annual operating expenditure of $160,000 or 14 cents per $1,000 of assessed land value.

The Oliver Chronicle and the South Okanagan Chamber of Commerce will host an all-candidates meeting at the Frank Venables Theatre on Wednesday, Nov. 5 starting at 7 pm.
