The Summit Centre on Anarchist Mountain was a busy place Saturday afternoon as the community held its annual picnic, barbecue and silent auction.
The event, organized by the Anarchist Mountain Community Society, is a fundraiser for the Anarchist Mountain Fire Department.
John Nett, a director with the society and one of the club’s founders, filled in for long-time society president Mark McKenney, who was away. Nett is also a former fire chief.
The fire department started after the major wildfires of 2003, said Nett, and the barbecue started in 2005, making this its 13th year.
Community members milled about and socialized, or placed bids on silent auction items before the dinner. A precise attendance figure wasn’t available, but it easily surpassed 100.
The beautiful weather helped, and at the elevation, the temperature was more pleasant than in the hot valley.
Nett said the fundraiser in recent years has raised roughly $5,000 each year for the fire department.
The money helps to fund some of the extras that the fire department uses.
“This is a great community,” said Nett. “Anarchist Mountain has great people. They all come for the same reason – to have a good lifestyle.”
