The results were as follows: three over 30 km, 78 below the speed limit, 84 wore seatbelts, eight didn’t, one cell phone, one U-turn and two jaywalkers.
Those are the kinds of statistics that Ron Johnson from Oliver Speed Watch deals with at Oliver Elementary School.
Sometimes they’re better, sometimes they’re worse, but the hope is that parents get the picture of how their actions impact safety around the school when they drop off and pick up their children.
Last week Johnson sat in his vehicle (once again) and recorded speeds and traffic violations from 8-8:30 am. He was watching for seatbelt use, speeding, crosswalk use and cell phone use.
He observed one mother and child cross the road without using the designated crosswalk. Another mother was waiting to cross the road with her children, but changed her mind and decided to use the crosswalk instead, which was a lot safer.
One motorist made a U-turn on the street, while another was observed talking on a cell phone while driving.
Johnson sends his reports to the school and the RCMP for information.
