The province is expecting to have a shortage of skilled workers in the coming years. As a result, school districts are promoting the trades.

From January 27-31, students will be participating in YES 2 IT Trades Exploration Day at local high schools.

This is a joint initiative among School District 53, the Industry Training Authority, local tradespeople, and local businesses.

There will be several local tradesmen coming into the schools to demonstrate their trade and allow Grade 6 and 7 students hands-on experience.  This year the focus is on food service with culinary arts, baking and meat cutting.

Okanagan Falls Elementary and Tuc-el-Nuit’s trades day will be Tuesday, January 28. The journeypersons participating are Chef Yvonne Gaudet from Fairview Mountain Golf and Country Club, meat cutter Dave Scmiyr and baker Ron Smart from SuperValu.

Oliver Elementary’s trades day will be January 30, with Bill Reid from the Firehall Bistro, baker Wayne Jones from Oliver’s Bakery and Deli, and meat cutter Marcia McLean from Buy-Low Foods.
