It was an exciting time at the Eastlink Curling Centre on McKinney Road recently when 128 curlers from the Okanagan Valley and Midway came to Oliver looking for big prizes and major glory.
Many rocks were thrown, many shouts from many skips were yelled, many shots were made and many more missed, many tears were shed, but in the end two rinks emerged unbeaten and picked up the major hardware.
George Lee and his rink from Vernon, after beating Oliver’s Cornie Zacharias by one point with his final rock in the first game, went on to win three more games handily and won the Crucetti’s Men’s A trophy.
Lee is a well known curler in the Okanagan, but has not been to Oliver for many years. Coincidentally, he met his long-lost cousin Sylvia Lowe at the after party on Friday night and promises he will be back next year.
Lil Blashko and her rink from Summerland met the Danielle Callen rink from Osoyoos in the Oliver Super Valu Ladies A final. It was a rematch of a final they played in Osoyoos just a few weeks ago, when the Blashko rink won. The Callen rink hoped for sweet revenge, but it was not to be, and Blashko picked up the glory and the hardware again.
Oliver’s best showing was to come first in both the Cam Rob Ladies B event, won by Jan Dewar’s Oliver rink. And Oliver’s Wanda Casorso rink won the Gerard’s Equipment Ladies C event.
The Eastlink Curling Centre combined bonspiel lived up to its reputation as being one of the best in the valley and the phrase most heard as people headed home was “We’ll be back next year.”
