The owner of a vehicle that burst into flames on Anarchist Mountain last week showed signs of impairment, but there was insufficient evidence to charge him.
That’s the word from Osoyoos RCMP after officers attended the single-vehicle accident involving a Jeep Cherokee that was reported at 7:10 p.m. on Monday, April 27.
Anarchist Mountain Fire Department also responded to the accident on Highway 3 near Long Joe Road, hosing down the flames.
The vehicle, however, was destroyed.
RCMP said the owner, a 34-year-old man from Maple Ridge, was at the scene.
There were, however, no witnesses to the accident and there was insufficient evidence to prove that the owner was the driver.
Police said they were told the driver had a hitchhiker in the vehicle who departed before police arrived.
Tire tracks indicate the Jeep was heading east, but it ended up facing west in the ditch on the opposite side of the road.
Anarchist Mountain Fire Department crews arrived on the scene very quickly after the fire was reported by neighbours near Long Joe Road.
