Herb Wycherley and his business partner Len McLean firmly believe in giving back to the community that has supported their construction business for the past several years.

That’s why they have organized a fundraising golf tournament to raise money to assist several community groups.

Last year’s inaugural H.W. McLean Construction Fundraising Golf Tournament raised almost $8,500 for the South Okanagan Children’s Foundation.

The second annual tournament, which will take place on Saturday, Sept. 6, will help raise funds for three local organizations here in Osoyoos.

They include the Osoyoos Childcare Centre, the Parents Advisory Council at Osoyoos Elementary School and a bursary fund for graduating Osoyoos Secondary School students.

“Last year we wanted to thank all of our loyal customers who have supported our business across the South Okanagan over the years,” said Wycherley. “This year, we have decided to keep the money local here in Osoyoos and help local organizations and local kids.”

Last year’s tournament was put together in only a couple of weeks, yet it attracted 90 golfers and helped raise over $8,400.

With more time for organization this year, Wycherley said he hopes as many as 120 golfers will sign up for the event and raise even more money.

“The whole idea is to have a fun day of golf and try and raise as much money as possible to support local organizations that could use the help,” he said.

This is strictly a “fun tournament” so a best ball format will be used and the scores don’t count, said Wycherley.

He and McLean had talked about organizing an event to support the community for some time now and felt a fundraising golf tournament was the best way to get a lot of people involved, he said.

“We’ve received huge support for our business from the community here in Osoyoos and this is our little way of giving back,” he said.

Because of the short time line last year, almost all of the participants were business acquaintances, friends and family.

Anyone who wants to do their small part to help raise funds and spend a fun day on the golf course is urged to sign up for this year’s event, said Wycherley.

“A lot of people didn’t know about the tournament last year and wanted to participate, but couldn’t,” he said. “This year we’re urging anyone who wants to help out and help raise some money for a good cause to sign up.”

The event, which kicks off with a shotgun start at 1 p.m., will include 18 holes of golf with a cart, dinner and silent auction. Call Pat Wycherley at 250-495-3587.
