An Osoyoos man is facing charges of dangerous driving and driving while impaired after he allegedly caused a string of collisions along Osoyoos's Main Street on the evening of July 24, police said.
Osoyoos RCMP spokesman Cpl. Dan Moskaluk said the 53-year-old man was apprehended by police at about 7:45 p.m. at the intersection of Kingfisher Drive and Main Street, where his black Volvo station wagon was blocking westbound traffic and bystanders were holding the man's car keys.
Moskaluk said police, using eyewitness accounts, were able to string together the events of the man's alleged rampage, which had started just a few minutes earlier.
Moskaluk said the man had been heading eastbound out of Osoyoos on Hwy. 3, tailgating vehicles so that several drivers were pulling over to get out of the man's way, when he was seen making a U-turn and heading back into town.
He then, seemingly intentionally, rear-ended a 2008 Subaru van being driven by another Osoyoos man in the area of Lakeshore Drive, Moskaluk said.
When the Subaru's driver pulled over to the shoulder of the road in an attempt to let the suspect go by him, the suspect seemingly purposely veered right as well and again rear-ended the Subaru.
Neither the Subaru's driver nor his 10-year-old son, who was also in the vehicle, was injured.
Moskaluk said the driver of the Subaru observed the man yelling loudly as he drove.
The man then proceeded to rear-end the back corner of a rental van driven by a young couple visiting the area from Ireland which was turning onto Solana Key Crescent, Moskaluk said.
The couple was also uninjured.
The suspect then continued toward Osoyoos's downtown core where he rear-ended a 2007 Infiniti sedan driven by an Osoyoos woman in her 70s who was turning left onto Kingfisher Drive.
After this collision, the man got out of his vehicle to inspect any damage that had been done to his own car and a bystander removed the keys from the suspect's ignition, Moskaluk said.
He said the suspect, who was also uninjured, is scheduled to appear in Penticton provincial court in the next few weeks.
