A well-known Osoyoos businessman who was on his way to pick up a friend for work was killed while trying to push his car off the road on Hwy. 3 on the evening of July 15.
Osoyoos RCMP said the 58-year-old man, who a number of people in the community have identified as Peter Von Burg, was heading eastbound on the highway just before 11 p.m. when his car, a 1980s model full-size sedan, broke down with mechanical difficulties at the base of Anarchist Mountain near the Fernandes Fruit Market.
The friend who the man was going to pick up was walking down the mountain and saw him stop.
The driver, with the help of his friend, attempted to guide the car backwards onto the highway's shoulder after placing the vehicle in neutral but lost his footing while pushing by the driver-side door and was crushed by the vehicle's front wheel.
The friend flagged down passing motorists and several people stopped to help lift the car off the man with the aid of a jack and pull him from under the wheel to administer CPR.
The man was taken to South Okanagan General Hospital in Oliver where he was pronounced dead despite the efforts of the assisting motorists and emergency services members.
Police and the B.C. Coroners Service are continuing to investigate the incident.
