Dr. Bonnie Henry announced no new deaths related to COVID-19 on Tuesday, marking the fourth straight day without a death from the virus.
The news comes with an additional nine test-positive COVID-19 cases and one epidemiologically-linked case, bringing the total number of cases in the province to 2,699.
There are no new community or healthcare related outbreaks and only 10 ongoing.
With no new deaths over the last four days, the total number of people fully recovered from COVID-19 in B.C. is now 2,319.
Dr. Henry said she is glad to see that case counts in B.C. continue to trend down and stay low, but she remains cautious as the rest of the world is still battling the virus at expanding rates.
“It matters to us when something happens in Italy, in Spain. It matters to use when it happens in the United States,” said Dr. Henry. “And now, we’re looking at the challenges that are being faced by countries such as India, and Brazil. It recognizes no borders and it recognizes none of our geopolitical barriers that we put in place.”
She noted that the world saw the largest increase in COVID-19 cases just yesterday, with over 136,000 people being affected.
Dr. Henry continued to acknowledge that international flights out of Canada are increasing and border restrictions are being loosened to allow families to see loved ones. This was to be expected, but must be monitored carefully as we move forward.
“Our goal needs to be to learn to live safely with this virus, to protect ourselves as much as possible as we do that. To do this, we need to be watching closely what is happening globally, what is happening in our own continent and what is happening here in the province,” said Dr. Henry.
