Senpaqcin students jumped on the climate action bandwagon today for a rally in Oliver Community Park.
The Grade 5-7 classes have been learning about people who have changed the world by their bravery and expression of voice. They watched videos of youth activists who spoke at the United Nations’ climate change summit this week
“We decided that we wanted to support the youth at the climate change convention by making signs and doing a protest march,” said Diana Roxo.
Students held up signs, soggy with rain, to show their support for environmental protection, urging governments to do something about climate change.
Similar climate action strikes are taking place across Canada today, with protestors expressing their disgruntlement about governments focusing more on economic growth than the environment.
At the climate summit, 16-year-old Swedish activist Greta Thunberg had some choice words for world leaders:
“I should be back in school on the other side of the ocean, yet you all come to us young people for hope. How dare you,” she said. “You have stolen my dreams and my childhood with your empty words.”
Thunberg said people are suffering and dying from climate change.
“Entire ecosystem are collapsing. We are at the beginning of a mass extinction, and all you can talk about is money and fairy tales of eternal economic growth. How dare you!”
