School District 53 is focussing on inclusivity with its new policy revisions.
At the school board’s January 24 meeting, a new draft of the Student Conduct and Discipline policy was presented, and is now up for feedback on the district’s website.
The new draft of the policy includes language about sexual orientation and gender identity, stating that “each student, regardless of their sex, race, religion, culture, sexual orientation and gender identity or expression (as outlined in the BC Human Rights Code) enjoys a safe, inclusive and welcoming environment.”
The policy also clarifies that all students are entitled to freedom from emotional abuse, and the right to feel supported in reporting unsafe actions.
The draft also includes the addition of a District Review Committee, which will “ensure that all avenues for success have been explored for all students, especially students at risk of not completing.”
The board is also currently seeking feedback on a new Accumulated Operating Surplus policy and an Expenses policy.
A new Budget Monitoring & Reporting policy has already been implemented.
The policies can be found on the districts website at www.sd53.bc.ca/district/Policies_Under_Review, where feedback can also be provided.
