Osoyoos’ Sun Bowl Skating Club (SBSC) participated in their first competition of the season taking home a slew of medals and racking up personal bests.

The 2022 Inter-Club Competition was the very first contest for many of the club’s skaters, according to head coach Patricia Fortunato who took over as SBSC head coach this year.

The competition was hosted by the Mount Boucherie Skating Club in West Kelowna, with the Sun Bowl Skating Club seeing 10 skaters compete in 14 events over the three-day event.

“They had glowing results with new personal bests, podium finishes, and some squeaky-clean programs,” Fortunato said.

The two coaches and “the entirety of the SBSC board and club could not have been prouder,” they said.

Of special note, Alexa Agostinho received straight gold across both report cards in her Star 2 Program and Element event, representing a perfect score.

Fortunato also highlighted Sarah Kelly for a “beautiful attempt at her axel in her program – a wonderful feat!” she said.

There are nearly 70 skaters in the club and Fortunato said she is hopeful there may be three boys joining in the coming season. The club will compete in two more out-of-town competitions before the skating season ends in March.

The next season will start in early January, and registration at sunbowlskating.com is now open.

The STAR program is the official “learn to figure skate” program of Skate Canada. The idea behind the program is to provide a fluid structure that allows skaters to progress in the manner best suited to them. It’s not mandatory for a skater to progress through one level before attempting the next.

In order to provide opportunities for skaters of all ages to develop fundamental figure skating skills in the areas of ice dance, skating skills, free skate and interpretive skating, Skate Canada created the five-level STAR program (STAR 1-5). For those skaters looking to go further there are two subsequent avenues, including the STAR 6 to Gold.
