A number of backcountry roads in BC remain closed, including Nk’Mip Road in Oliver as part of a recovery plan following severe wildfires.

A press release from the Ministry of Forests advises backcountry road users that roads closed in October 2021 across the Thompson Okanagan region following 15 severe wildfires remain closed. Nk’Mip Road off Black Sage Road is one of them.

The closures were established under the Motor Vehicle Prohibition Regulation of the Wildlife Act and apply to backcountry roads across approximately 536,000 hectares.

Roads were closed to allow areas to recover from wildfire impacts including soil erosion and increased vulnerability of wildlife due to habitat loss.

The Ministry says the focus on Nk’Mip Road is wildlife rehabilitation.

Residents who live on this road are not affected by the closure. Individuals may operate a motor vehicle on private property. People may apply to access closed areas by visiting https://portal.nrs.gov.bc.ca/web/client/home.
