The Firehall Brewery in Oliver is applying to have its temporary outdoor patio become a permanent fixture.
The Liquor and Cannabis Regulation Branch has received the brewery’s application for the patio that was previously operated under a temporary extended service area during the pandemic.
The branch has approached the Town of Oliver for comment, but council has opted out of the review process.
Director of Development Services Randy Houle said the expanded patio has been in operation for two years with no bylaw complaints from the public. He noted the patio is below Main Street adjacent to a back alley, with an adequate buffer from neighbouring properties.
“The patio provides a safer space for customers to gather safely during a post-pandemic time,” Houle said.
The director pointed out that approval of the application does not allow for the patio’s current 30-person occupancy limit to be increased.
Brewery president Sid Ruhland said their temporary service area expires on June 1.
He stated their application will allow for more space per person in the long term, improving the safety of patrons and staff.
“Having a comfortable and sizable outdoor space is attractive for customers, and thus will help our business survive the COVID-19 pandemic and recover through its aftermath.”
Ruhland confirmed the business has not incurred any complaints from neighbours.
