The Town of Oliver is tipping its hat to a number of individuals and organizations nominated for a Spirit of Oliver award.
Top praise is going to the following 2020 nominees:
- Desert Valley Hospice Society
- Emergency Support Services
- Front-line health workers at McKinney Place, South Okanagan General Hospital, and Sunnybank Retirement Centre
- Janet Shaw
- Jolanda and Louis Balog
- Kelan Harty
- Okanagan Gleaners
- Sally Franks
- Sandra Hughes
- Seventh Day Adventist Church
- Vance Potter
- Women of Oliver for Women
Unfortunately, due to the pandemic, the 16thannual event to recognize these outstanding volunteers cannot be held.
“The difficult decision was made to again postpone the annual award event to follow the province-wide restrictions in place due to the COVID-19 pandemic,” said the Town in a press release.
As such, the winners of the 2020 Spirit of Oliver awards will be announced at a later date.
The ceremony is normally held during Volunteer Week (April 18-24) in collaboration with Oliver Parks and Recreation.
“During these trying times it’s more important than ever to come together as a community and recognize individuals and groups that have been dedicated to making a difference in Oliver throughout 2020,” the Town said.
There are five categories for the Spirit of Oliver Awards: Individual Youth; Outstanding Community Group; Community Roots; Community Builder; and Individual Adult or Couple.
We would like to applaud all of the nominees for their contributions to our community, and also thank the individuals that took the time to nominate these individuals and groups for their efforts.

Known a few people during my life. I can only think of one or two like Vance Potter. Well deserved and congratulations Vance and to all the other winners in the truest sense of the word..
