On June 13, Youlearn.ca hosted their graduation ceremony at the Atrium of SOSS. The small, intimate event celebrated this year’s 32 graduates. Nine of the 32 were in attendance, surrounded by their family, friends, and loved ones. The graduation theme for Youlearn’s class of 2019 was “I Lived,” with graduates ranging in age from late-teen to mid-fifties. School board dignitaries were in attendance, including Superintendent Bev Young and School Board Chair Rob Zandee, who offered warm words of congratulations. In her speech, Ms. Young indicated that she often speaks at high school graduations about the importance of challenge, grit, and perseverance. Further, Mr. Zandee spoke about the uniqueness of the Youlearn graduates, in relation to the amount of determination it takes to be a Youlearn grad. This nicely complemented a key line in Ms. Young’s speech that “the hardest challenges we face become our proudest accomplishments.” A special treat of the evening was having fellow Youlearn students, Kelan Harty, 17, and his sister, Laura Harty, 11, play three lovely piano pieces. In addition, Principal Will Eaton, delivered his principal’s address that focused on a verse from Youlearn’s grad song, “I Lived.” His advice: “embrace the fall.” He encouraged the grads to see failure as opportunity to work through new challenges. His speech was followed by the awards portion of the ceremony. Many of the graduates in attendance received scholarships or bursaries for furthering their education. Guests left with the notion that it is never too late to rise above struggles and setbacks, and that education opens doors to opportunity.
