(From Oliver Ambassador to dentist, we caught up with Dr. Puneet Brar, who followed her dream career when she left Oliver 10 years ago.)
TC: When were you an ambassador in Oliver and how did that program shape your future?
PB: I was an Oliver Ambassador in 2009/2010 alongside Supreet Brar and Jasmine Bassi. The Oliver Ambassador Program really changed the way I viewed myself. It gave me the confidence to use my voice and understand that the small or large actions you make in your own life and in your community have a ripple effect on those around you.
TC: What prompted you to pursue a career in dentistry?
PB: I loved the dentist as a kid, I used to see Dr. Ng in Oliver. I even went on to work for Dr. Ng as a dental assistant in high school. I decided at a very young age that I wanted to be a dentist, and throughout my entire life I kept on that same path and nothing changed. I could not be more grateful for that.
TC: Where did you go after graduating from SOSS?
PB: After SOSS, I packed my bags to first complete my Bachelor of Science Degree at UBC Vancouver. Then to Sydney, Australia to complete the Doctor of Dental Medicine program.
TC: What is the most challenging aspect of your job?
PB: Being a dentist requires constant critique of your own work, in order to master the craft. A dentist is always looking for new and innovative ways to improve and grow.
TC: Many people would find it uncomfortable working on other people’s teeth. Why don’t you?
PB: Oral health is an important part of your overall well-being. It is my responsibility to educate patients on this importance and do my job in ensuring my patients leave with healthy smiles.
TC: How has COVID-19 impacted your career?
PB: I was forced to take an extended vacation before starting my career after graduation. The protocols in the dental practice have changed in a number of ways after COVID-19. A new way of life we are all becoming accustomed to.
TC: Why did you decide to come back to Oliver and Osoyoos to work when there are so many other beautiful places to start your career?
PB: The opportunity to work at the Osoyoos Dental Centre caught me off guard, as I was expecting to work in Vancouver. I grew up in Oliver and have a lot of love for the Okanagan. I love the city life, but the sense of community in our small towns is unmatched.
TC: What is your advice to young people who want to make a difference in the world?
PB: My advice to young people would be to listen to their inner voice and trust it. You are the only one who can decide the life that fits your ambition and your passion.
TC: What is your fondest memory growing up in Oliver?
PB: My fondest memories consist of my siblings and I finding new adventures every day in our cherry orchard.
