The regional district has approved the installation of video surveillance cameras at the Willowbrook fire hall.
The board passed the staff recommendation at its Thursday meeting.
Legislative Services manager Christy Malden said there have been reports of vandalism, theft and property damage at the fire hall.
“There have been attempts to break into the fuel tanks, enter the building and steal outdoor equipment,” she said.
Willowbrook Fire Chief Tony Iannella said there haven’t been any recent incidents.
“I simply wanted to install an alarm system due to all our recent equipment purchases, and the camera was an addition based on catching people snooping around.”
The proposal will see the installation of an alarm system for the main building and additional locks on doors.
Malden said the cameras should deter trespassing and theft of equipment.
“Cameras will allow us to see if there was vandalism. This will help ensure the Willowbrook Fire Department is left functional by preventing theft of important assets,” she said.
Malden noted that preliminary price quotes range from $4,000 to $5,500, with resolution quality sufficient for law enforcement purposes.
As per the district’s video surveillance policy, signage must indicate that the area is under surveillance.
Area C director Rick Knodel is a vocal supporter of video surveillance.
“I see no reasonable expectation of privacy on any public property, and I think out of necessity cameras will become much more common as the crime rate increases.”
