Police and firefighters in the South Okanagan were kept busy during the BC Day long weekend.

Two fatalities, a structure fire and a collision marred the BC Day long weekend in the South Okanagan.

A man’s body was found in Skaha Lake last Saturday after he was reported missing. Emergency personnel could not revive him with CPR. It is believed he drowned.

On July 31 just north of Osoyoos, a motorcyclist from Penticton died after colliding with a car that was emerging from a service station on Highway 97.

Police say the motorcycle struck the driver’s side of the car. Both the rider and the driver of the car were taken to hospital with injuries.

The 26-year-old motorcyclist subsequently passed away, according to police.

The 53-year-old driver of the car from Osoyoos reportedly suffered minor injuries.

In Oliver on Monday morning, firefighters were called to a small, detached structure at Constellation Brands (Jackson Triggs) winery on Tucelnuit Drive.

Fire department spokesman Rob Graham said smoke was emanating from what was believed to be either a pumphouse or generator building. He noted there was an actual fire in the ceiling area.

At first they broke windows to gain access, but subsequently had to cut through a door to get inside.

Graham said there was some drywall and ceiling damage inside.

Contrary to what was previously reported, there were no injuries sustained by firefighters, Graham pointed out.

No cause was determined.

Also on the weekend (Sunday), firefighters and police attended a motor vehicle accident on Highway 97 near Road 1.

Graham said a vehicle struck a telephone pole, but no extrication was required.

An ambulance crew checked the driver, but there was no confirmation of injuries.

Local RCMP investigated the incident but could not be reached for further details.
