The Town of Oliver is exploring options in securing a new pound keeper contract.

At a recent council meeting, members agreed to look at three options including: a request for proposals, the cost of building a Town-owned facility; and determining if the Town of Osoyoos is interested in leasing a portion of its pound to Oliver.

“I don’t want to be locked into one choice,” said Councillor Dave Mattes.

The Town’s existing contract with Second Chance Animal Rescue expires on October 1. Contractor Gerri Eagleson has advised the Town that she will not continue providing this service.

In 2011 the dog pound capital budget of $30,000 was removed and Town staff was requested to proceed with tendering for a pound keeper.

Only three parties showed interest, and of the three, only one submitted a tender.

Due to a lack of interest, Town staff brought forward other options for council to consider.

The regional district is reportedly working with Osoyoos to provide pound space for Electoral Area A and C.

Corporate officer Cathy Cowan said if Oliver wanted to build its own facility, it could be accommodated in a corner of the Public Works yard. The existing bylaw officer would look after the facility.

But because the cost of a pound has not been budgeted, general reserve funds would have to be used, she pointed out.
