The Town of Oliver has approved a request to honour local war veterans by placing tribute banners on Main Street.

At Monday’s council meeting, civic leaders agreed to proceed with the banner program in cooperation with the Oliver Legion and local service groups. The program will require lobby efforts to acquire financial contributions from these service groups. The matter will go to budget deliberations in 2017.

The cost is expected to be approximately $5,000, with $1,500 coming from the legion, $2,500 from service groups, and $1,000 from the Town.

Corporate Officer Diane Vaykovich said the legion approached the Town to consider a tribute to 27 local veterans. Similar banner programs have been established across Canada, and this could be an ongoing legacy project, she noted.

“Through the displaying of the banners, this could be an opportunity to engage the community in honouring and remembering local veterans,” she said. She added that 2017 is Canada’s 150th anniversary, and the banner initiative could be recognized as Oliver’s “Canada 150” project.
