The terrorist(s) who committed the horrific acts that exploded crude bombs which killed innocent women and children Monday afternoon during the running of the world’s most famous marathon most likely think of themselves as heroes and martyrs and will always defend their actions using sick and twisted ideology.
What they are, in fact, are murderers and cowards.
Once again, citizens across the United States, and across Canada and around the world, will hold their children a little tighter and hug them a little harder in the coming days, weeks and months after yet another senseless terrorist act.
The crude bombs used to kill three people, including an innocent eight-year-old boy who had gathered near the finish line to watch his dad compete in the Boston Marathon – his mom and sister were also seriously wounded – indicate this was the work of a “lonesome wolf” rather than an organized terrorist organization.
This matters little to the three people killed and 180 wounded – many of them with life-altering, horrific injuries – as it will no doubt takes months or years to find out who was responsible or unveil their motivation for murdering innocent civilians.
As all terrorist acts are designed to do, millions of Americans and hundreds of millions of people around the world no longer feel as safe and secure walking the streets and living their lives as they did last week.
Ever since the terrorist attack on America on September 11, 2001, there have been concerns and predictions that terrorists would target people who gather in large groups.
It has already happened on the subway systems in Europe and it finally happened on American soil on Monday during the running of the world’s most prestigious foot race.
Going to any large sporting event will never feel quite as safe again and security measures at major events like the Super Bowl and the Olympics will be staggering.
While security was reportedly extremely high before and during the event, there’s simply no way to keep track of more than 27,000 competitors and hundreds of thousands of spectators at an event spread out over several kilometres in one of America’s most heavily-populated cities.
Considering thousands of police and intelligence officials will be tracking down every lead and looking at every camera angle for the next few weeks, those responsible for this massacre are likely to be caught and punished to the full extent of the law.
But that won’t alter the fact that three more innocent people have been killed, 180 have been injured and an entire nation has been wounded to the core once again.
There really are no easy answers when it comes to trying to find these monsters before they act.
The United States has tens of thousands of police and intelligence officials who spend every waking hour trying to keep track and track down people and organizations who share terrorist ideology.
With a few crude devices that can be purchased at any local hardware store and a black heart bent on death and destruction without any respect for the sanctity of human life, terrorists and terrorist organizations seem bound and determined to continue their murderous rampages now and in the future.
This is a crazy world we live in when innocent people continue to be murdered on a regular basis by complete strangers.
There will be no easy answers in the coming weeks and months.
All law-abiding citizens can do is continue to live their lives with dignity, love those who mean the most to them and never allow evil people to dictate their quality of life.
It remains scary that so few evil people in this world can cause so much death, destruction and heartache, but that is the world we live in.
Many terrorists who murder innocent children may think they have a special place in heaven after their hearts stop beating. But they will be going straight to hell, which is exactly where they belong. And no one should shed a single tear at their demise.
