Today we know the building as the Sonora Community Centre, but in September 1949, it opened as Osoyoos Elementary and Junior High School. The Sept. 6, 1949 Osoyoos Times tells how principal Robert Jenks planned to have about 360 students from grades one through six assemble in the auditorium before being taken to their 10 new classrooms. The modern school featured non-shine blackboards and rooms with individually controlled temperatures. A modern buzzer replaced the old bell.
