Re: Spotted Lake Fire Aug. 2, 2010
Our house is among those that were at risk from the wild fire at Spotted Lake.
Thanks to the quick phone calls and the rapid response of the fire crews, the only damage to our property was approximately five acres of burned pasture, some charred fence posts and a house covered in fire retardant.
This fire could have been catastrophic to Spotted Lake and the Kilpoola area had not the ground and air crews been so knowledgeable, experienced and able to respond rapidly.  The residents in the area did all they could to help those of us that were close to the fire.  We personally moved horses and pets to friends and neighbours who looked after them even though they may not previously have met.
A stock trailer arrived from town ready to move animals if the fire spread.
We were well treated by the fire response teams, Mark Pendergraft from the RDOS and the RCMP both during the fire and in the aftermath.
We have heightened respect for the teams that work to keep us safe.
But for this event, we would not have seen them in action, nor experienced their determination to protect people, property and nature.
And, to live in a neighbourhood that is filled with diverse, interesting people who are so willing to help in time of need is our good fortune.

MORE THANKS FROM KILPOOLA RESIDENTS

Editor:
On August 2, 2010 at approximately 3 p.m., a wild fire was spotted heading towards our community of Kilpoola, west of Osoyoos.
The fire had started at the edge of Hwy. 3, west of Spotted Lake and quickly spread up the hillside fueled by tinder dry brush and sage.
Our many neighbours showed up as soon as word of the fire spread.
All things moveable were quickly evacuated to safer ground.
The elderly, horses, dogs and cats were kept away from harm by helpful neighbours.
RCMP, Forestry Services, pilots, aircraft and water tankers all did a coordinated and professional job.
I would like to mention that water supplies were crucial since Kilpoola has no system of water or any firefighting equipment.
We thank you all for saving our community.
Alex and Lynn Sutton,
Osoyoos

MARINA COST PROJECTIONS RAISE QUESTIONS

Editor:
I see from your recent article the estimated initial marina costs could be $2.5 million dollars.
I also recall the public meeting of July 6 when the number suggested was a mere $250,000 dollars.  Someone is not telling the truth.
It seems council has entered into an understanding with Watermark without the usual practice of first getting an idea of the real costs of the project.
If the Town’s share is $1.5 million, will they borrow the money or raise the taxes to pay for this boondoggle and will there be a referendum to allow the taxpayers to voice an opinion on these high costs?
If the Town fails to honour the “comfort letter” they sent to Watermark, will there be a court action by Watermark?
As time passes it’s becoming obvious this is a lousy deal for the Town and taxpayers.
Better the Town should revoke the restriction on a dock in front of the hotel and let them build it there for just themselves.

Osoyoos
